The Evolution of Kissing

Unless you're this guy, you probably know that kissing does not make babies. So what, you might wonder, caused kissing to evolve as part of the human sex act?

  1. This is really fascinating! Kissing by itself would seem rather arbitrary if there was no initial reason for the practice to begin. I wonder how prevalent similar behaviors are in other species?

  2. You know, I have actually wondered about this before. Our lips are one of the most sensitive parts of the body: it takes up a very large amount of space in cerebral cortex for processing relative to its size. If kissing is useful for reproductive purposes, it makes much more sense that the brain would devote so much space to this part of the body.
